Quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) are both essential components of quality management, but they have distinct differences in their focus and scope. While some qualities are interrelated the two are defined differently.

Quality Control

Quality control (QC) is the process of monitoring and verifying the products or services at each stage of production to ensure that they meet the specified quality requirements. It is a reactive process that focuses on identifying and correcting defects or nonconformities in the final product. The primary goal of QC is to prevent defects from reaching customers and to improve the reliability and consistency of the product or service. Examples of QC activities include testing, inspection, and measurement.

Quality Assurance

Quality assurance (QA) is a proactive process that focuses on preventing defects and ensuring that the processes used to create the product or service are effective and efficient. It is a comprehensive approach that involves the entire organization, from management to front-line workers, to ensure that quality is built into every aspect of the product or service. The primary goal of QA is to ensure that the final product or service meets the customer’s expectations and requirements. Examples of QA activities include establishing quality standards, conducting audits, and developing processes and procedures.

Perspective on QC and QA

The concept of quality control may not always involve the inspection of a tangible product. This is because the service itself may be intangible and difficult to measure objectively.
While the concept of quality control may be different in service organizations compared to those that produce tangible products, it is still an important aspect of quality management to ensure that customer requirements are met and that the service provided is of high quality.

In summary, QC is focused on identifying and correcting defects in the final product, while QA is focused on preventing defects by ensuring that processes are effective and efficient. Both QC and QA are essential components of quality management, and organizations need to balance the two to ensure that their products or services meet the customer’s expectations and requirements.
