The aerospace standard AS9145 establishes requirements for forming and documenting APQP and PPAP. Released in 2016 and titled “Requirements for Advanced Production Quality Planning (APQP) and Production part approval Process (PPAP)” these requirements integrates within the multiple standards such as AS9100, AS9102, AS9103 and AS9110.
What is AS9145?
AS9145 is the standard made specifically for the aerospace, space and defense industry. The international Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) established the AS9145 standard. AS9145 provides a framework for suppliers to meet vigorous demands within the industry through best practices. Within the AS9145 there are a few phases to help with the AS9145 requirements. The APQP and the PPAP.
Topics within AS9145
Within AS9145 the main topics covered are APQP and PPAP. APQP is a process that occurs during the product development lifecycle to facilitate communication throughout the supply chain. This process allows suppliers to detect errors early on, incorporate customer feedback and deliver high quality products. There are 5 Phases within the APQP.
-
Planning
-
Product Design and Development
-
Process Design and Development
-
Product and Process Validation
-
Ongoing Production and Post Delivery
PPAP is an output of APQP. As the last step in the APQP process, PPAP demonstrates if a supplier can replicate the production of parts with consistency to a customers standards. PPAP is required by many Aerospace customers and has been for several years.
There are many tools within the AS9145 standard to help with these processes. The graphic below shows the APQP Maturity Model which helps evaluate the use of APQP and all the core elements included. This maturity model and rating system is a way for the customer to assess their supplier’s maturity on the use, implementation of their supplier’s APQP processes.
Understanding AS9145
APEX QA offers AS9145 training to help make quality simple for your quality management leaders. This training is designed to provide participants with an understanding of how the risk management elements of Aerospace Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) help ensure successful launches based on robust New Product Development processes, as well as how to employ the same tools to manage continual improvement in products and processes. The multidisciplinary approach to APQP knowledge management is stressed as essential to shortening development cycle times and reducing launch risk in new product introduction.
This seminar also provides guidance on the Aerospace PPAP. It shows where and when to incorporate prevention tools such as DFMEA, DFM/DFA, Process Flow, PFMEA, Control Plans, MSA, and SPC. This class provides a comprehensive overview of the overall APQP and Core Tools suite.
APQP and PPAP with the associated tools needs to be integrated with AS9100D clause 8.0 Operation.
